Peabody Museum

It’s a great way to reach out to the community, meet friends and help with scientific research. It’s fun and fascinating! Hours are flexible. As members, volunteers receive FREE admission to the Museum and a subscription to the Explorer membership newsletter. And there are special volunteer orientation and enrichment programs held regularly.


Volunteers Needed

The museum is seeking volunteers for:
  • Helping out in the Discovery Room
  • Assisting in the Peabody collections
  • Lending a hand in the Museum Store
  • Providing clerical support
  • Helping at special events and family programs
There are also many opportunities for students, including:
  • Events — help plan and work on the day of special events
  • Discovery Room
  • Museum Store
  • Information Fossil Carts — display and talk about specimens Vertebrate Paleontology
  • Reprint Library — computerization of Reprint library
  • Vertebrate Paleontology Laboratory — remove fossils from rock, clean and mount fossils
  • Herbarium — help maintain inventory of collections
  • Invertebrate Paleontology — database projects
Skills and Other Requirements

No prior museum experience is expected. Training will be provided for all volunteers in departments throughout the museum.

Training

Those who wish to become docents and teach at the Museum are required to participate in the Peabody Public Education Office’s seven-session docent training program (there is a small fee for materials that is refunded after a docent has taught five school programs).

After completing the training program, volunteers will be able to give a general tour of the Peabody Museum, including the dinosaurs in the Museum’s Great Hall of Dinosaurs. The Peabody Museum continues to look for docents to teach schoolchildren in grades K through 2 on site at the Museum throughout the academic year. If you have a college degree and enjoy working with children, please ask about our docent program.
